MELKSHAM’S fund-raiser extraordinaire, Robbie Newton has completed his 26.2 mile back garden marathon dressed as morphman.
Due to run the London Marathon on Sunday, he wouldn’t allow the cancellation of the race stop him, so decided to run around his back garden 1,787 times to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
“Wow, what can I say! Thank you all so much for the fantastic support and sponsorship!” he said. “That was really difficult, but your good wishes got me through!
I will advise the amount raised ASAP but if you would still like to donate, please pop along here –
“We even got a spot on the 10 o’clock news last night!
“Thank you everyone.
“Macmillan is a charity close to my heart. I’ve seen their good work close at hand as they have helped both friends and family.
“Any donations are appreciated by both me and Macmillan Cancer Support in these strange times.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has had a catastrophic effect with the cancellation of thousands of events and the loss of billions in income through fundraising events.
“The Virgin Money London Marathon alone, which should have taken place on Sunday 26 April, is the world’s biggest one-day fundraising event, which raised more than £66.4 million for thousands of charities in 2019.
Many of these charities have had to reduce or stop services at a time when vulnerable members of society need them most; thousands of staff have been placed on furlough and many charities will not survive the next few months.”
