A MELKSHAM grandfather and grandson have achieved something unique in motorsport after finishing first and second in the ASWMC Autotest Championship.
The top two positions on the podium were taken by Ray Sissins and his grandson Conner Sissins.
Ray, a retired motorsport engineer, has been involved in most forms of motorsport over the years, and Conner, 16, started competing at 14 and this was his second full year in Autotest, finishing 2nd overall, just two points behind Ray.
Ray said, “I shall have to watch out, as Conner seems to be getting the hang of it quite quickly.
“We’ve also done well in the ACSMC championship with a 1st and 2nd in class. Ray took the class win and 4th overall giving him best South of the Thames title. Conner took 2nd in class and 6th overall and best road car title. Conner has also taken 3rd place in the ‘under 21s’.
“The car we use is a standard road going Vauxhall Corsa 1400, and it has been very reliable which is a great help in winning these titles as you need to score heavily in all rounds. One non finish would have changed the score line completely as 3rd place was only a couple of points behind. We are now preparing for next season and wishing our luck will hold out again.
“You don’t need a £¼ million car, as we have proved, to take part in motorsport, there are many events where an everyday road going car will do. All such events are well organised and safe to enter.
“Anyone who would like to know how to get started in motorsport go to www.bathmotorclub.co.uk and click on committee. Phone or email for friendly advice or just turn up at one of our regular club nights which are held on the second Monday of every month at The Rose & Crown, Hinton Charterhouse, Nr Bath. You will be surprised at what you can do for very little.”
