MP Michelle Donelan is hosting a Disability Confident event at Melksham Town Hall on 26th July between 10.00 and 12.30.
Her office reports, “She has been working with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to organise this opportunity for businesses and organisations in the Chippenham constituency to learn more about what being Disability Confident means, how you can participate and sign up to this excellent initiative and, most importantly, how hiring disabled people can be a real positive for employee and employer alike. There will also be a presentation on Access to Work and the Government grants available to help employers accommodate disabled employees.
“Michelle has previously spoken about the importance of disabled people to economic growth. She has long thought the wording of the debate is too crude because it is not just about needing disabled people to be in jobs to boost economic growth, more importantly they deserve the same career opportunities as able-bodied people – not just a question of economics but also equality. It is vital to empower and assist the disabled so that they have the confidence and the tools to work on an even playing field.”
Michelle Donelan said “Helping disabled people into work is not simply about getting them a job, it is about providing all members of our society with an equal opportunity to have the career they want.
“When I spoke on this issue in the House of Commons last year, I fully supported the Government’s commitment to get one million more disabled people into work by 2027 and I hope that during this event, employers can learn how they can be better at this and also see the benefits of diverse workforces and hiring those who have overcome obstacles.”
“Pluss is sponsoring the event, a nationwide leading disability employment specialist, who has kindly agreed to give a brief presentation on just how much of a positive impact employing disabled people can bring to any employer. As well as specialist organisations like Pluss, who will be available to talk through what services they offer, answering any questions you might have about hiring disabled people, there will also be Disability Confident businesses and organisations, who will share their experiences with the scheme. There will also be information on how you and your business can sign up and, if your business is already Disability Confident committed, progress to the next level, as well as what Government funding is available.”
