New goalposts have been installed at Riverside Drive, giving local residents the opportunity to enjoy a kickabout in the popular green space.
The project was completed following Melksham Town Council’s agreement to fund and replace the old goalposts, after a local boy expressed his wish to see new ones fitted.
To celebrate the installation, members of the Melksham Town FC under 14s held a friendly game at the field. Team manager Paul Vince said it was ‘fantastic’ to see the goalposts in place.
The motion for the new goalposts was brought to the council by Melksham’s Mayor, Cllr Saffi Rabey.
“As someone who knows and loves the Riverside area, it’s been really special to see this project come to life,” said Cllr Rabey. “It’s such a beautiful part of town and bringing something new and engaging here feels like a real win for the community. The fact that both children and adults can enjoy the new equipment means it’s not just a play space – it’s a place for families, friends and neighbours to come together, get active and enjoy the outdoors.”
Although the land is owned by Wiltshire Council, the local authority gave permission for Melksham Town Council to fund and carry out the improvements.
Cllr Rabey added, “I went down to the area the day after the goalposts were installed and it was amazing to see a big group of children already playing – laughing, running around and just making the most of the space. That moment really captured why this project was so important. It’s about creating opportunities for connection, activity and joy – and seeing it happen so quickly was incredibly rewarding.”
