A special walnut tree has been planted in the King George V Park by Melksham Town Council as part of a European tree-planting initiative.
The Baum Challenge sees towns nominate each other to plant trees. Melksham was nominated to take part in the challenge by Bradford-on-Avon, which had been nominated by Trowbridge after the town was put forward by its German twin town, Leer.
Each tree planted represents a town’s commitment to the environment and its willingness to collaborate across borders.
Before the screening of the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms in the park on Saturday 13th September, Melksham’s Mayor Saffi Rabey and Deputy Mayor Jennie Westbrook planted a walnut tree, donated by Dick Lovett BMW and MINI Melksham.
Cllr Rabey said, “The Baum Challenge 2025 is a beautiful and impactful initiative that’s sweeping across Europe, uniting towns through the shared act of planting trees. It’s more than just a challenge—it’s a symbol of environmental responsibility, international friendship and community spirit.
“We were thrilled to accept and continue the chain by inviting Calne and Guernsey, both of whom embraced the challenge with enthusiasm.
“A walnut tree was chosen as it is known for its strength, longevity and the richness it brings to its surroundings—qualities that reflect Melksham’s values and aspirations. It will grow in KGV Park as a lasting reminder of our town’s role in this international movement and our dedication to a greener future.
“We’re proud to be part of this growing network of towns across Europe and Great Britain, each contributing to a legacy of sustainability and friendship.”
