AGE Friendly Melksham has said that it is making plans for the town’s ‘age friendly’ status to be recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Over the next six months, the organisation will create an action plan, which they say is a “core requirement” for Melksham to be able to progress towards WHO Age Friendly Status.
Work will also involve a survey of older people in the Melksham community area, and setting up a new Age Friendly steering group, involving the Older People’s Forum, community groups and members of the Melksham Area Board and local councils.
Melksham is a member of the UK Network of Age-friendly Communities – it was first rural town in the UK to join the initiative in 2018. Achieving WHO Age Friendly Status for Melksham will demonstrate that the community is committed to promoting healthy and active ageing and a good quality of life for residents.
Membership will also enable Melksham to share information about best practice with other WHO recognised communities across the world.
