THE Environment Agency is investigating the death of over 1,000 fish in Clackers Brook, with the area closed to the public whilst tests are carried out.
The cause of the deaths is still unknown and the Environment Agency is appealing for anyone with information about what caused it, to contact them.
The incident was reported to the agency by a local resident who found scores of dead fish along the length of the brook.
A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said, “Since Sunday (29th April) we have been investigating why more than 1,000 fish have died in Clackers Brook, Melksham. If anyone has any information about what caused it, please contact our 24-hour incident hotline 0800 807060.
“As soon as we were aware of the fish kill we told local landowners and the local authority. While we investigate what caused this incident, access to the location is limited to staff wearing the appropriate equipment. “
A Wiltshire Council spokesperson added, “We have taken the proactive measure to close the footpath alongside Clackers Brook in support of the Environment Agency, as they are investigating the pollution incident and conducting further tests on the water.”
