MELKSHAM Without Parish Council is taking part in a campaign to promote awareness about how to protect yourself and your home in the event of a flood.
The campaign, led by the Environment Agency, encourages people to find out if they are at risk of flooding and asks people to share online what they would save in a flood by using the hashtag #JustOneThing.
In recent years, areas such as Atworth, Beanacre, Shaw, Whitley, Shurnhold and Roundponds have all experienced flooding. The agency says that 5.2 million properties in England are at risk of flooding.
The Environment Agency issues three levels of flood warning:
Flood alert – Prepare
• Prepare a bag that includes medicines and insurance documents.
• Check flood warnings
Flood warning – Act
• Turn off gas, water and electricity.
• Move things upstairs or to safety.
• Move family, pets and car to safety.
Severe flood warning – Survive Call 999 if in immediate danger.
• Follow advice from emergency services.
• Keep yourself and your family safe.
