MELKSHAM Town Council has agreed to proceed with plans to provide public toilet facilities for King George V playing field.
At last week’s asset management meeting, councillors voted in favour to pay for one of the cubicles at the Bath Road toilet block to be refurbished, up to the value of £23,925.
The other cubicles at the Bath Road toilet block will remain closed, but could be refurbished and reopened as and when resources allow.
Councillors have asked town clerk, Linda Roberts, to first establish if the existing equipment in the cubicle can be brought into a good state of repair at a lower cost to the quote of £21,650 provided by Healthmatic for a full refurbishment of the cubicle.
If the existing equipment is not suitable, the council will commission the works by Healthmatic.
At the meeting, deputy mayor, cllr Jon Hubbard, said, “Let’s see these toilets operational as soon as possible. The reason I am very keen on the Bath Road toilets is because we have an issue there, and that’s called the skate park. And asking kids from the skate park to walk all the way up to the pavilion isn’t going to happen.”
Suggested opening times for the Bath Road toilet are 8am-6pm in winter months and 8am-8pm in summer, to prevent misuse and vandalism.
