The police operation to crack down on illegal e-scooters is in full swing, as Melksham Police report seizing and destroying an e-scooter that was being ridden dangerously on the pavements around Melksham.
From 1st August, anyone stopped riding an illegal e-scooter or modified high-powered e-bike can expect it to be seized and destroyed under a new police operation, launched in response to numerous complaints about safety and antisocial behaviour.
After seizing an e-scooter in Melksham, the police said, “The rider refused to stop however officers, knowing the offender, attended his home address and seized the scooter when he arrived home still riding the scooter.”
Earlier this month, one resident expressed concern that there is an ‘accident waiting to happen in Bowerhill’ after regularly seeing an e-scooter rider speeding in a residential area.
The police said, “We appreciate the public concern around e-scooters and e-bikes – those seen riding them illegally can expect to have them seized. As they are uninsurable, you won’t be able to get them back.
“Please remember that e-scooters are illegal to ride in public areas unless they are officially rented in an approved trial area, which Wiltshire does not have.”
