A FASCINATING collection of old artefacts from Melksham’s history was on display at a special pop-up museum in the Assembly Hall last week.
Organised by Melksham and District Historical Association on Thursday 16th May, the one-night only museum displayed a wide range of items offering a glimpse into the town’s past.
“We welcomed 58 visitors, in addition to regular members, to view items the association holds on behalf of the town,” explained the association’s chair, Paul Carter.
“Young and old were treated to sitting (or laying in the stocks!) while Spencer’s clock was on display for the first time since it was removed from the factory on Beanacre Road prior to the factory’s demolition.
“A display on the Avon fire included digitised cine-film footage donated by the daughters of Roger Denmark. This is a teaser for an exhibition on the Avon Tyres and Avon Rubber Melksham factory on Thursday 26th September.
“The steam whistle from Maggs’ Rope Factory was given a few blasts and various artefacts from the factory were on display.”
Other artefacts included old copies of Melksham Messenger, a newspaper from the 1960s, books about the town and old photographs and documents.
“As we enter summer, our talks will take a hiatus but a Walk and Talk on Rachel Fowler will start at the Rachel Fowler Centre on Tuesday 11th June at 7pm. If unable to walk, then stay and chat in the hall until our return.”
