Proms in the Park could be coming to Melksham this year as Melksham Town Council considers a free live screening of the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms in King George V Park (KGV) on Saturday 14th September. Melksham News wants to hear what you think!
The BBC Proms started over 100 years ago and is a classical music festival held every summer at the Royal Albert Hall in London. To end the eight-week festival, there is a final Last Night of the Proms concert, which is screened around the country.
The idea was put forward by cllr Jennie Westbrook at the council’s community development committee meeting earlier this month and unanimously supported by fellow councillors. Cllr Jennie Westbrook said the park could transform into the ideal setting for an evening of music and entertainment. Residents would be encouraged to bring their own picnics, should they wish to, or make use of the cafe at Jack’s Kitchen.
Town council officers have delegated authority to spend up to £8,000 for the event, including security and a television licence. As it exceeds the committee budget, the full town council will need to approve the expenditure.
“I am thrilled at the prospect of bringing Proms in the Park to our town,” explained cllr Jennie Westbrook. “I propose this event as a way of bringing Melksham together as a community. This will be a free event and promises to be an evening of pure magic, where friends and family can come together for an unforgettable musical experience.”
The next full council meeting is on Tuesday 28th May.
