Read Easy Melksham held its third AGM in an informal atmosphere on 27th April.
The treasurer, Esme Howard, reported a satisfactory financial position owing to the generosity of sponsors such as Knorr-Bremse and GreenSquare Housing*.
The chair of the management team, David Williams, gave a presentation of the changes and growth of the project during the previous 12 months. The number of people who have been helped or are being helped to learn to read has reached a total of 16 and it is hoped that more will come forward soon.
Penny Morgan, a Read Easy coach, described what an amazing effect learning to read has had on the student she is helping. She also described how rewarding an experience coaching can be.
The guest speaker was Brenda Harrison from The Learning Curve. She gave a short talk about the work of The Learning Curve who provide a wide range of excellent courses for adults. Read Easy and The Learning Curve have recently set up an arrangement where The Learning Curve can refer students to Read Easy when they need extra help with reading.
I in 20 adults in the UK have a reading age of 5 or less. Read Easy helps people with low reading skills learn to read in a non-classroom setting. Coaching sessions are free, fun and one-to-one. Confidentiality for learners is assured and the learning pace is set to suit each one.
They train volunteers to teach new readers and no previous teaching experience is necessary.
