THE union jack flag adorned Rowley Place for the 70th anniversary of VE day, as residents and friends gathered together for a tea party.
Nick and Liz Galpin who organised the event said, “We had a lovely afternoon. The hall was nicely dressed up with flags and banners, we had Spam, corned beef and ham sandwiches, jelly and icecream and an abundance of cakes.
“It is so important to commemorate historic days in our country’s history, and what better way to do it then with a nice lunch and singsong.”
Liz and Nick spent hours putting it all together for the residents, “We wanted there to be attention to detail and reflect the sort of tea party they would have had 70 years ago. I even made little flags to go in the cupcakes. It was important to us that it was a fun afternoon for them. I think they appreciated it.”
Resident Elizabeth Taylor said, “They are the most fantastic people. They are there for all of us and there is nothing they wouldn’t do for us.
“We didn’t have to do a thing for the tea party, they did it all for us. If it wasn’t for them, most of us would sit at home by ourselves.”
Melksham Town Crier, Peter Dauncey was invited to the tea party and also praised Nick and Liz.
“They always do a tremendous job and the tea party was no different. They are a lovely couple and the community is very lucky to have them.”
