  • Works to build a ‘forgotten pathway’ off Burnet Close to start in the spring Works to build a pathway linking Burnet Close to Western Way are due to start in the spring, five years after Wiltshire Council received the funds for the project. Wiltshire Council received a contribution of £124,000 in April 2020 from housebuilder Taylor Wimpey, which developed the nearby Pathfinder Way estate in Bowerhill, to support the delivery of a shared-use path linking Burnet Close to the Speedwell Close area to the Toucan crossing on the A365 Western Way. However, the pathway has never been built, with residents and students from Melksham Oak Community School left to commute along a ‘muddy quagmire’ which they report often floods in wet weather. Wiltshire councillor Jon Hubbard has been campaigning on the issue for five years, and Melksham Without Parish Council has also campaigned for the completion of the pathway over the years.   • Female supergroup raises £30,000 over decade of fundraising shows An all-female supergroup has raised £30,000 for local charities over a decade of fundraising gigs, with their final farewell performance taking place at Melksham Assembly Hall this month. Female of the Species is made up of five local women who have played fundraising gigs over the last ten years to raise money for local charities from the Bath and Wiltshire Air Ambulance to smaller charities including Voices, a Bath-based domestic violence charity. The band’s final farewell gig took place on Saturday 13th September at Melksham Assembly Hall, bringing a decade of fundraising to an end, where they raised over £3,000 for Voices. The ‘supergroup’ brings together five singers from popular local bands, including Melksham locals Jules Moreton, a vocalist who helped set up the band, fellow vocalist Charmaigne Andrews, and saxophone player Karen Potter, alongside Julia Hanratty, Nicky Davis and Claire Perry, backed by local musicians.   • People with dementia find friends at local club People living with dementia locally are invited to make new friends and find a sense of purpose at Mill Street Club. The national award-winning day centre in Trowbridge is open four days a week, offering companionship and a wide range of stimulating activities for people affected by any type of dementia. Members come from the Melksham area, as well as Trowbridge and Bradford on Avon. Joan Berrett, who has attended the club for two years, says it is the highlight of her week. She said, “I like it here. I enjoy the company. We are quite lucky – there are no miserable people here. We care about each other. Why sit at home on your own?   • New consultant brings fresh inspiration to Berryfield Slimming World group Berryfield in Melksham is welcoming a new face at its long-running Slimming World group – and she’s no stranger to the journey its members are on. Local resident and business owner Jayne Hurd, who has been a Slimming World member since May 2016, has lost more than three stone and transformed her health and confidence. Now, after training at the Slimming World Academy in Derbyshire, she’s stepping up as the group’s new consultant, ready to inspire and support others towards their own weight loss success. Jayne’s story is one of remarkable resilience. In 2012, she was diagnosed with cancer while raising her two young daughters as a single parent. “I was engulfed in the fear of not being around to see my beautiful girls grow up,” Jayne said.   • Care home gathers donations for Melksham Food Bank A Melksham care home is inviting residents to help collect donations for Melksham Food Bank throughout September. Blenheim House Care Home, on Bath Road, is gathering non-perishable foods over the course of the month as part of a harvest festival. Residents can drop off items at the care home in the boxes provided. At the end of the month, the items will then be donated to Melksham Food Bank. “Thank you so much for all your support,” said events manager at Blenheim House, Chris Preston.   • Seend crowned Wiltshire’s Best Kept Large Village Seend has been named Wiltshire’s Best Kept Large Village in a national competition run by the Campaign to Protect Rural England. The village came first in the Large Village category, scoring 83 points for tidiness, cleanliness, presentation, conservation and community spirit. Judges from the Wiltshire branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England and from Wiltshire Council visited each village in the competition during May and June.   • Older adults’ daytime disco at Melksham Assembly Hall A daytime disco is being held next month, offering a safe, inclusive and welcoming space for older adults aged 55+ to enjoy music from the 60s through to the 80s, get active and connect with others. The event, on Friday 10th October, is being held at Melksham Assembly Hall from 2pm to 4pm and is free for people to attend. Highlights will include music from across the decades, a licenced bar, plus free tea, coffee and squash, space for people to relax and an opportunity for fun, movement, and social connection.   • Resident ‘desperate’ to live life feels ‘trapped and stuck’ in healthcare system A Melksham resident with a complex neurological disorder says she feels ‘trapped and stuck’ in the healthcare system after a series of failed referrals for medical support. Natasha Ward, aged 18, has Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), a condition that affects how the brain and body communicate, causing problems with movement, sensation and thinking. Since her diagnosis, Natasha says the NHS has not provided the care she needs. “I feel trapped and stuck,” she said. “I need this help and I need to be able to live my life, but I can’t because I am not getting the care that is needed. “I am being refused the care they say I need and I am being told that they cannot help me because I am too complex. Doctors say that every symptom I have is linked to FND but that isn’t the case. At the moment I have unknown gastro issues and have had them for years, but nobody can work out what’s going on and they won’t look deeper into it.” Read more on our website. The link is in our bio
  • Melksham Times Past A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis Gratitude of a Greyhound We know Henry Sawtell (1860-1944) as the manager of the family-owned feather factory that was located on Broughton Road. But his name was better known nationally for his sideline of breeding and racing greyhounds, specifically the famous “Melksham” strain. Melksham Tom was one of the greatest stud dogs in the country during the 1930s and was the sire of more track winners than any other greyhound. I have a fondness for greyhounds (we have two), but I personally don’t agree with racing as a betting sport and so I’ve not written a lot about the Melksham line of racers. But I came across an article that I thought was sweet and particularly poignant since our home is located in a former veterinary surgery.
