Wiltshire Royal British Legion’s Annual County Parade, will be held this year in Melksham, on Sunday the 7th June.
The parade will consist of the Standards and members of all the branches in Wiltshire, along with contingents of the regular forces and cadets.
Melksham branch president Trevor Paterson said, “It is an honour to be selected as there are nearly 30 branches in Wiltshire.”
The parade will start from the King Street car park at 2.40pm, marching to St. Michael’s Church for a Service of Rededication. Members of the public are welcome to join the service, and must be seated in the church by 2.45pm.
The Melksham branch, together with the local community have been a great support to the Royal British Legion, especially for the Poppy Appeal. For two years running, they have raised record breaking amounts for the appeal, raising over £20,000 last year.
Trevor Paterson said, “The parade takes a lot of organising but we are working closely with the town council to ensure things run smoothly. The most important thing at the moment is making the residents aware of the road closures in the town on the day of the parade. Residents of Canon Square, Church Walk, St Michael’s Court and Victoria should be aware of the road closures. Also, there will be parking restrictions around the Cenotaph.”
After the service, the Standards will be ‘Trooped’ and the parade will march back through the town, where the salute will be taken outside the Town Hall. Refreshments will then be served in the Assembly Hall.
“It will be a great day,” added Trevor Paterson. “It is a big occasion for Melksham to hold such a prestigious event and we are thoroughly looking forward to it.”
