Four pupils at Seend Primary School raised over £180 in a cake sale last month to raise money for Syrian children.
Isabelle, Olivia, Freya and Tatum wrote a letter home to parents, designed posters and explained their plan to the rest of the school in an assembly.
Freya said, “The cakes went very, very fast. I thought it went really well and we did it because of how the Syrian children were feeling; they are suffering through the war with no food or drink.”
Headteacher Jackie Chalk said, “The children came to me a few weeks ago and said that they had read an article about how poor the children were and what money could buy for them. They also remembered one of our recent worships where I had shown them some footage of Syrian children and the conditions some of them live in. They were so moved they wanted to raise money to help them.
“On the day we were inundated with cakes and it was great to feel that support from the parents and children. We were also provided with cakes by Haydens Bakery in Devizes and by the end of the day the children had raised £181.85.”
The school will donate the money to Unicef’s Syria appeal, and it could pay for emergency water and hygiene kits for six Syrian families or polio vaccines to protect around 1,500 children.
