THE Manor School, Melksham, has achieved the School Games Mark Award. The Government- led award scheme is facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.
The School Games Mark is facilitated by Selwyn Widger from Kingdown School in Warminster. Kingdown School, along with Melksham Oak, have provided training, festivals and competitions as part of sports development across Wiltshire. Both Melksham Oak and Kingdown School have also provided young volunteers, leaders and officials to make competitions possible.
As part of the application, the school had to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs. The Manor School has participated in a range of sporting events this year including cross country running, orienteering, swimming, football and rounders.
Kerry Haines, headteacher said, “This is the first year we have applied for the Games Mark so the highest level we can gain is bronze, which we are delighted to have been awarded.
“At The Manor School we have an extensive range of after-school clubs and we organise competitions, both within Melksham and with other schools across the county. We encourage all our pupils to take part in these activities regardless of ability. We always strive to be the best, and to win, but we also want our pupils to understand winning does not always mean being first, you are a winner when you have challenged yourself and done better than you have before. We are extremely proud of our pupils for competing in local inter-school competitions this year.”
