ST MARY’S Broughton Gifford Primary School raised over £300 for their new sensory vegetable garden project at a supermarket bag packing event last month.
Children from years 5 and 6 packed customers’ shopping at Asda on Saturday 24th March, led by teaching assistant Hayley Gardyj, with help from Helen Little and Mrs Blundell, raising a total of £314.25.
Hayley Gardyj said, “We are looking forward to phase 3 of the garden project to almost complete the garden. With parents’ help, we will be building the new raised vegetable beds and planting the sensory plants.
“The aim of the project is to engage and educate our children in the growing, caring, harvesting, and sharing of delicious and healthy food.
“It is based on the belief that these skills and understandings are essential to the development of lifelong joyful and positive eating habits. Successful implementation of the project requires many supporters and sponsors to help build the garden.
“The project takes an innovative approach to pleasurable food education. The school will be able to provide the children with access to the garden which the children have already designed. The children will spend time learning about plants, seeds, water management, compost and soil. They will also learn about the seasons, different vegetables, stages of growth and the connection between care in the garden and flavour on the plate.
“We are still in desperate need of a polycarbonate greenhouse to store the plants that children are growing and would love to hear from someone who can either donate or offer a substantial discount for one.”
