FOUNDERS of Seend-based artisan food start-up Seaspoon, Tim and Kate, will be celebrating at the BBC Good Food Show Winter as winners of a prestigious BBC Good Food Show Producers Bursary Award.
Great friends from childhood, Tim and Kate wanted to incorporate the wellbeing benefits of seaweed into their family routines, but struggled to see how.
They embarked on a journey of fascination, discovery, and development to harness what Tim and Kate call ‘a magnificent wonderfood’ in easy to use ways.
The result is Seaspoon, which they launched in July, described as “versatile, natural, balanced and highly nutritious seaweed blends, ready to boost everyday food and drink with exceptional goodness.”
Within just weeks of their launch, Seaspoon has been mentioned in the Delicious Magazine podcast, will shortly launch a partnership with a national supplier they say the hat-trick is to have now won a BBC Good Food Show Producers Bursary Award, which champions the very best in new food producers.
Seaspoon made it through a stringent annual tasting session with the BBC Good Food Magazine editorial team in September, to be announced as one of just six winners from across the UK. As part of the award, Seaspoon will have a stand in the Producers’ Village at the famous BBC Good Food Show Winter, taking place at Birmingham’s NEC from 29th November to 2nd December.
Katy Truss of Fabulous Food Finds, coordinator of the awards said, “The tasting panel for the BBC Good Food Show Producers Bursary Awards were really impressed by Seaspoon seaweed; a really exciting new product that offers such an easy and accessible way to add nutrition to everyday cooking and adds great flavour too.
“Visitors to the BBC Good Food Shows are always looking for new artisan producers and we’re seeing growing interest in vegan, gluten free products and food with nutritional benefits, as well as great taste; Seaspoon ticked all these boxes!
“Seaweed is an ingredient that I’m sure we will see entering the mainstream due to its sustainable nature, and nutrient dense makeup and it’ll make fantastic addition to the BBC Good Food Shows.”
As health and wellbeing continues to move up the public agenda, Seaspoon’s timing is spot on. Seaweed is hailed as one of the most nutritious natural foodstuffs on the planet, with advocates including Jamie Oliver and Heston Blumenthal.
By blending different types of seaweed (sea spaghetti, sea greens, sea lettuce and dulse) Seaspoon have harnessed a spectrum of vitamins and minerals, plus protein and fibre, attuned with RDI (Recommended Daily Intake). A teaspoon, or 2g, of Seaspoon Seaweed Boost can be consumed daily. What’s more, it’s exceptionally easy to use – think smoothies and soups, marinades and mashes, rubs and roasts!
