Speeding motorists will be warned to slow down by new speed indicator devices (SIDs) that will be installed across the town this week.
The electronic signs, purchased by Melksham Town Council, will be permanently used at seven locations previously identified by residents as speeding hot spots.
SIDs will be located on Spa Road, Sandridge Road, Snowberry Lane, King Street/Semington Road, Church Lane, Lowbourne; and one device will be rotated between the Kenilworth Gardens estate, Coronation Road and Ruskin Avenue.
The devices will be moved regularly to temporary locations within these areas to comply with Wiltshire Council guidelines and to maximise their effectiveness.
The devices will also record the number of vehicles passing through the area and their speeds, allowing the town council to collect evidence about the effectiveness of the scheme, and also help advise the police about where and when speeding enforcement may be most effective.
A spokesperson for Melksham Town Council said, “Melksham Town Council is delighted to report that seven speed indicator devices (SIDs) will be installed across the town from this week.
“This is the culmination of campaigning by concerned residents, who have successfully highlighted the issue in our town and helped to determine where the devices are most urgently needed.
“Melksham Town Councillors backed a motion to purchase and install the cameras but delays in their manufacture and delivery as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak had a knock-on impact on the installation date. It’s fantastic that the devices are finally ready to be put in place and make our town an even safer place to live.
“We are grateful to Wiltshire Council and their Highways team for their support for this important work in Melksham.”
