Alzheimer’s Support has opened four new carers’ groups to offer support and a social outlet for relatives and friends of people living with dementia.
New members are invited to join the groups – located in the north, south, east and west of Wiltshire – which meet monthly in local eateries across the county. The informal get-togethers give carers the chance to spend time with others in a similar situation, learn more about dementia or to simply chat and make new friends.
The West Wiltshire group will meet in different locations, including Melksham to make sure there’s always one close by for people to attend.
Mary attended the north Wilts group before the pandemic and says it helped her gain insight into husband Pete’s illness. She said, “We talked about the different aspects of dementia and the times in which they develop. It helps to know we’re not alone and can get help and have a talk if any one of us isn’t coping.”
The meetings are hosted by trained dementia professionals, who can answer any questions members have about dementia or signpost to other beneficial services.
Kate Sharpe, acting community services head said, “Caring for someone living with dementia is one of the most demanding jobs there is. Our friendly and informal groups offer a bit of me-time for carers and we warmly invite new members to come along.”
