NEW speed indicator devices (SIDs) have been installed across the town, warning speeding motorists to slow down.
The new SIDs have been installed on Spa Road, King Street, Semington Road, Snowberry Lane, Sandridge Road, and Lowbourne – which all have a 30mph limit.
The installation of a seventh SID that was to be rotated between the Kenilworth Gardens estate, Coronation Road and Ruskin Avenue – which are 20mph zones – has been delayed due to a manufacturing error. It should be installed within the next 10 days.
The devices will be moved regularly to temporary locations within these areas to comply with Wiltshire Council guidelines and to maximise their effectiveness.
The devices will also record the number of vehicles passing through the area and their speeds, allowing the town council to collect evidence about the effectiveness of the scheme, and also help advise the police about where and when speeding enforcement may be most effective.
It is hoped that the first set of statistics will be collected at the end of October, when the SIDs are moved to new locations.
About the delay to install the seventh SID, a spokesperson for Melksham Town Council said, “Unfortunately the manufacturer who builds the SIDs made an error during manufacture which impacted the seventh and final device, earmarked for Kenilworth Gardens.
“We are as frustrated as the public on this, and especially so for those residents on this 20mph road, which is a notorious speeding hotspot.
“We received confirmation from the manufacturer today that the SID is to be installed within 10 days. Thank you for bearing with us and be assured we are doing everything we can to get this SID installed and look forward to the benefit we hope it will bring.”
