More than 30 women have taken part in the first sessions of a new women-only running group in Melksham, created to offer a safe and supportive space for exercise and social connection.
The group, Healthy Empowered Runners, was started this month by four local women and will meet weekly. It aims to provide a welcoming and inclusive space for women to meet others, get active, and enjoy the benefits of running.
One of the organisers, Tracy Steel, said, “Our first run went so well despite the freezing temperatures. We all crossed the line together and there was such a great atmosphere of support and kindness. I’ve had lots of messages since the first run, so we are expecting even more women to join. I think we have started something very special.
“Our second session was another great turnout of over 30 women. It was very empowering, with new friendships being made.”
The group meets every Monday outside the Town Hall in the Market Place at 6pm for a 5km run suitable for all abilities, with participants welcome to walk or run sections.
Sessions are led by Tracy Steel, Carlie Bourne, Sherelyn Cowles and Laura Vidler, who hope to share the physical and mental health benefits of running with other women.
The four women first met during the Covid pandemic after exercising together informally, which later developed into regular group runs. Since then, Tracy and Laura have completed ultramarathons, including a 100km run in 2024.
Women wishing to join the group must register for a free ticket each week by texting RUN to 07834 659368. Participants are then added to a WhatsApp group for updates.
