THE Mighty Titans of Bowerhill are celebrating completing their epic charity challenge – running 1,000 miles from Land’s End to John o’Groats in just over six days!
The 16 runners, who all train at New Era Fitness in Bowerhill, have raised nearly £12,000 for Wiltshire Mind – the Melksham-based mental health charity which offers support across Wiltshire. This figure is expected to rise over the coming weeks as more donations are counted, helping them to smash their original target of £10,000.
Group leader and owner of New Era Fitness, DJ Hussey said, “What a hell of a week it was – truly a life affirming adventure and one that not one single person on the team will ever forget!
“Amazingly we finished only 15 minutes behind schedule – we planned to finish in exactly six days but set the goal to finish in seven or under to allow for any mishaps, injuries, wrong turns, vehicular issues or anything along the way and in the end were truly amazed to come in so close to our original schedule – literally everything went to plan.
“Our 1,000-mile running journey was absolutely fantastic, the whole team worked so well together, kept each other mentally and physically strong and really and truly got each other through it – it got tough at times believe me.
“The lack of sleep was probably the thing that most drained us, running through the night and then having maybe only 2-3 hours sleep before your next running section was extremely tough – but we did it!
“There are so many people I’d love to thank but I think you’d need an entire ‘Mighty Titans VS The Entire Country’ edition of the Melksham News to cover them all! The support we received from home was absolutely unbelievable, it felt at times like we had the entire weight of the county behind us, it really did. Our drivers/support team (Dave, Tracey, Steve and Alison) were incredible, as well as our fundraising manager, Catherine, and they were all just as exhausted as us all when we finished at John o’Groats after having driven over 2,000 miles to support us.
“We also had incredible support from local businesses to actually make the dream a reality and get us to the start line with corporate funding. And man, what can I even say about the fundraising? We are currently sat just below £12,000 on our Just Giving page which we are hoping/planning to add to with offline donations and the remaining corporate funding, as well as the monies we amazingly raised from our online auction.”
