MEMBERS of Melksham Shed have been passing on their DIY tips to youngsters at Canberra Youth Centre.
The initiative, taking place over the summer holidays, was created as Melksham Shed says “youngsters today are not all able to do simple DIY tasks”.
Chris Pickett from Melksham Shed reports, “As a starter to the idea, it was planned to build, from pallet wood, some planters that could be used to enhance the youth centre. After the second day, one of the young lads asked if he could make one to give to his carer and one for his nan! This single request has made the idea and the subsequent activity, totally worthwhile.
“So, if the Melksham Shed can (and does) encourage older people to dabble in DIY, with the chat and coffee breaks, in a convivial atmosphere, then why not an intergenerational ‘Shed’ where ideas can be shared?
“Thanks to Canberra, the guys of Melksham Shed have made some young people more aware of what they can do with their hands, instead of operating a ‘Game Boy’ or other computer gizmos! A truly ‘Age Friendly’ activity.”
