Tops Hair Salon & Beauty made it to the final five in a national competition to win a £5,000 makeover of the salon’s music system last month, narrowly missing out on the top spot.
More than 300 salons from around the UK entered the competition organised by the National Hairdressers Federation and music rights organisation PRS, to win a ‘Music Makeover’ worth £5,000.
Tops came fifth overall with their entry, which was a written piece and video filmed in the salon.
Alex Stevens, office manager said, “I saw the advert in the NHF magazine for the competition and thought straight away that we should enter.
“We love music at the salon and play lots of different genres but we haven’t got the best equipment to showcase what we play properly. We would like to be able to have one integrated music system that allows us to play soothing music in the beauty room and more upbeat music in the salon at the touch of a button.
“I put together the written entry which took me two weeks to write and then Vix Stevens, salon manager, filmed a video of us all in the salon miming along to The Beatles ‘Help’. Everyone took part; one person was washing hair, one was making a cappuccino, another was on the phone at reception and Vix had rollers in her hair – it was such great fun.
“I then had a call from the organisers of the competition to say we had made it to the final five and we would now be visited by one of the judges for an interview. Unfortunately, we didn’t win, but we were so pleased to come fifth out of 300, it’s a huge achievement.
“We are definitely going to enter again next year but will talk more about how music plays a key role in the life of the salon and how it makes our clients feel when they visit.”
