MELKSHAM Town Council is proceeding with legal action against the suppliers of the faulty speed indicator devices first installed across the town in 2020.
The council has decided to take legal action after receiving no response from the suppliers to correspondence sent to them by solicitors in December last year. The council is claiming back the amount of £12,495 (plus VAT) for the electronic devices, which were found to have faulty batteries.
According to the agenda for last week’s full town council meeting – where the matter was discussed in a session closed to the public – the estimated court fees to issue the claim will be approximately £800.
In October last year, the town council agreed to move forward with their plan to combat speeding in the town, by purchasing new speed indicator devices, whilst waiting to resolve their dispute with the suppliers of the first batch of devices.
The council agreed to spend up to £15,000 on new devices, which encourage drivers to slow down when driving over the speed limit. These signs were erected across town in October, in a number of speeding ‘hot spots’.
