A uniform tariff system for taxis has been rolled out across Wiltshire, so passengers will know the maximum amount they are going to be charged whatever their starting point in the county.
Currently passengers can be charged different rates depending on where they are in Wiltshire. The system of north, east, south and west zones was inherited from the time before Wiltshire became a unitary authority in 2009.
The change to a uniform tariff from 8th May will set the maximum amount to be charged for taxi journeys anywhere in the county with taxi firms being given the option to charge less if they wish.
Taxi drivers have already been consulted on the changes over an eight week period last summer with the proposals agreed at a licensing committee. The changes were advertised in local newspapers giving members of the public the opportunity to comment.
Peter Hutton, portfolio holder for public protection services said, “Taxis provide a valuable 24-hour service which also contributes to the economy.
“These proposals follow lengthy consultation with taxi drivers and will mean when you take a taxi journey in Wiltshire you know the maximum it will cost wherever you are.”
