THE Broughton Gifford BG Games will return for the seventh year but on the earlier date of Saturday 1st July.
Organiser Christopher Fielden said, “When we held our first games in 2012, we little dreamt that it would become an annual event, but here we are coming up to edition number seven!
“Circumstances have meant that there are a number of changes this year. First of all, the date has been brought forward to Saturday, July 1st. This means that, because it is outside the school holidays, we hope to see much more participation from children and their parents.
“Secondly, with the unavailability of The Fox and the Manor House paddock as venues, the latter because the hay will not have been mown, the children’s sports have been moved to the school and The Bell on the Common will play a more important role. The timetable has also been changed so that the final events take place in the Village Hall, before the medals ceremony. We are also pleased to have Wadworth’s Brewery on board as sponsors.
“The full programme of events is on the cover of the magazine, but here are some of the highlights. The day starts as usual on The Common with old favourites such as the dog agility event, penalty shoot-out and scooter dash. (Please bring crash-helmets!)
“At midday, we move to The Bell on the Common, where Dougie’s fitness classes mean that we will now introduce touch rugby, to complement the men’s, women’s and children’s tug-of-war. For the less physical, there will be boules, speed pool, darts and pints of the sponsor’s 6X to wash down the barbecue.
“After two hours, we move to the far end of the village for the children’s sports at the school. To maintain the parents’ interest, we are introducing wheelbarrow racing. Please bring your own wheelbarrow, passenger and crash-helmet!
“Finally, from 4pm we have skittles and new-age kurling in the Village Hall, leading up to the medals presentation at 6pm. Later, there will be live music at The Bell.
“All the profits will be shared equally between the school, the pre-school and St. Mary’s Church.”
