MELKSHAM Volleyball Club has come to an end after more then 30 years in existence.
The club has been forced to close its doors as there is nobody willing to take on the running of the club from Susan Brennand who is retiring from her duties to concentrate on coaching.
The club began in 1981 in Calne when it was set up by Sue Pearce and Ray Roscoe before moving to Melksham in 1991 where they have played at Christie Miller ever since. They had a range of teams, both male and female in different age groups from under 15 teams through to senior teams.
Susan Brennand took over the running of the club in 2002 and has been at the helm ever since. She said, “It really is sad that we have had to end but the lack of help and volunteers has made it impossible to continue. I was first made aware of the club as a student at George Ward as my teacher Sue Pearce ran the club and encouraged pupils to get involved – the club was thriving but unfortunately the support isn’t there now. Over the years I have had many players who would have been great to take over the running of the club but for one reason or another they have left, with many going off to university and I do appreciate it takes a lot of hard work and people don’t have the time.
“I will stay in the game as I have a few offers to coach, but in an ideal world somebody would take on Melksham Volleyball Club and I can stay here as a coach.”
