  • Melksham from the air – residents put on their history hats at association’s recent talk Around 85 people, including 36 visitors, gathered to learn all about Historic Melksham from the Air at the Melksham and District Historical Association’s talk last month. Showing photos from the association’s extensive photographic catalogue along with video footage, the audience were taken higher and higher via the church roof to factory chimneys, paramotors, planes and drones. “There is a link with EastEnders here because Aerofilms, who took the photo of the Avon, also took the composite aerial photos for the original title sequence for EastEnders,” explained chair of the association, Paul Carter.   • Melksham Times Past The identification of Titanic’s unknown child A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis FOR 95 years, the body of a young boy remained unidentified. He was buried in Fairview Lawn Cemetery, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, with the memorial stone reading, “Erected to the memory of an unknown child whose remains were recovered after the disaster to the Titanic April 15th 1912.” The body of the fair-haired toddler was the fourth person pulled from the ocean by crewman Clifford Crease, from the recovery ship CS Mackay-Bennett, on 21st April 1912 and was the youngest recovered victim of the RMS Titanic. Descriptions were publicised to try to identify the boy: Male, estimated to be two years old with fair hair, wearing a grey coat with fur on collar and cuffs, brown serge frock, brown petticoat, flannel garment, pink woollen singlet, brown shoes and stockings, probably a third-class passenger.   • Fun football fundraiser returns in memory of local teenager A fun football fundraiser is being held this month in memory of Melksham teenager Ben Smith, who died three years ago after being assaulted on a night out in Bath. The event, on Sunday 27th April at Oakfield Stadium – home of Melksham Town FC – is being held to raise funds for the charities that supported Ben’s family after his death. These include the Ben Saunders Foundation, which raises money for children and young adults with cancer; SmileForJoel, which supports families torn apart by murder and terrorism; and One Punch UK, which raises awareness about the devastation one punch can cause.   • Community space hosts Healing Café training session for the region A community space in the heart of Melksham hosted a training day for Christians across the region to learn more about setting up Healing Cafés in their local towns. Over 30 people from different church groups gathered on 31st March at ‘that meeting space’ in the Market Place for a day of practical teaching by a team from Catalyst4Healing (C4H). Groups from towns including Yeovil, Shaftesbury and Salisbury, as well as more locally from Bradford-on-Avon, Box, Devizes and Melksham, attended the session to learn more about running their own Healing Cafes.   • Planning starts for Melksham Open Gardens The team behind Melksham Open Gardens are busy planning for this year’s event and are calling for people to get involved. Due to be held on Sunday 20th July, the event sees residents from across town open their gardens to the public and allow the community to enjoy their hard work in aid of The Children’s Society. Organiser Lesley Windebank said, “The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming and many people are now thinking about their gardens. “However, the members of The Children’s Society in Melksham are thinking about scones, fancy cakes and white tablecloths.   • Melksham businesses spread Easter cheer to local families Two Melksham businesses, New Resource Recruitment and Snap Fitness, have joined forces to bring Easter joy to local families supported by the charity Homestart. Through their combined efforts, over 350 Easter eggs have been donated to children facing difficult times. Homestart provides vital support to families across Wiltshire facing challenging circumstances such as financial difficulties, isolation, mental and physical health struggles, and bereavement. Their mission is to prevent crises and give children the best possible start in life. New Resource Recruitment led the charge by collecting 276 Easter eggs from generous clients, while members of Snap Fitness contributed 85 eggs. In addition to their egg donations, Snap Fitness has also organised a fundraising hamper, with proceeds going directly to Homestart. This fundraising effort will continue until Monday, 14th April.   • Bowerhill Scouts take on gruelling endurance night hike Two teams from 1st Bowerhill Scouts recently put their skills to the test in a gruelling endurance night hike, covering nearly 20 miles in cold, dark conditions. The TrekQuinox Hike, held from 22nd to 23rd March, started and finished at Cleeve Hill Scout Camp in Bath. The event challenged scouts to step outside their comfort zones, testing their teamwork and navigation skills. This year, 88 teams of Scouts and Explorer Scouts took part, marking the first time the Bath District opened the event to Wiltshire Scouts.   • Bowerhill gets a spring clean at community litter pick The community came together recently for the Great Bowerhill Spring Clean, with residents, local Beavers and Scouts joining forces for a litter pick on a sunny Saturday morning. Around 35 Beavers and Scouts, along with their parents, took part, and approximately another 15 members of the general public attended, collecting rubbish over the course of two hours. The spring clean was organised by the Bowerhill Residents Action Group (BRAG). Chair Mark Blackham said, “The groups covered a large area of the village, locating specially hidden tags to win prizes, as well as collecting a massive amount of rubbish along the way. “We collected 10 large sacks of rubbish, four sacks of recyclable waste, and even a metal bedstead.   • Gompels launches innovative prescription system Gompels has launched an innovative new state-of-the-art system for residents to collect their prescriptions at its pharmacy at Spa Medical Centre. The new system, the first of its kind in the country, aims to reduce waiting times and improve the efficiency of the pharmacy. Patients with a smartphone are sent a text message with a QR code when their prescription is ready to collect. On arrival, they scan the QR code at a screen in the waiting room, notifying the pharmacist to bring out the prescription. “Thirty-five per cent of our patients are already using this new system. It’s straightforward, simple, and is reducing waiting times, queues and stress for both pharmacists and patients. It’s working really well,” explained pharmacist Marilyn Stapleton.
