STAFF at the local pub, The Water Meadow, have raised £600 for a young Melksham boy with a rare genetic disorder.
The community fun day, held on the grounds of the pub, was organised to help towards raising £5,000 for six-year old Curtis Lowe who has a rare genetic degenerative neurometabolic disorder called Metachromatic Leukodystrophy Disease (MLD).
The day involved raffles, stalls, face-painting and the chance to have a ride in a horse and cart.
Mayor of Melksham, cllr Adrienne Westbrook joined the Lowe family to officially open the event, taking the time to also enjoy a ride in the horse and cart with Curtis.
Staff member at The Water Meadow, Greg Mackenzie said, “I’m proud that we raised £600, every little helps towards the target.
“The Lowe family really enjoyed it, they were very grateful for the money.”
Parents Claire and Chris are trying to raise £5,000 to buy an eye gaze communication board that will help Curtis communicate with the family, as he is unable to talk.
Curtis was diagnosed with MLD at the age of four and his condition has progressed to the point where he is unable to walk or eat, needing a tube through his stomach to feed him. MLD affects one in 40,000 people, primarily children.
It is an inherited disease but parents are typically not affected. At present, there is no cure.
