Two Bowerhill slimmers who have lost a combined 9st have been named ‘Woman of the Year’ in their Slimming World group because of their inspiring weight loss and support for other members at the group.

Jenny Murray and Megan Starling scooped the title in each of the Bowerhill sessions earlier this month.

Jenny and Megan both joined Slimming World earlier this year after becoming increasingly unhappy their size. There were 11 nominees in altogether voted for by the members across two sessions.

Group leader Claire Wilkinson said, “I’m so proud of Jenny and Megan. Not only do they look fabulous, they’ve improved their health and are bursting with energy. All our nominees are a huge inspiration to everyone in our group and I hope they inspire other women and men in Melksham to change their lives in the same way.

“It can be hard to admit that you need to do something about your weight and to ask for help, but Megan, at just 20 years old, shows what’s possible when you do. She always tells other members that if she can do it, anyone can and that’s certainly true because anyone can!”

Winner Jenny said, “My family and friends are all amazed by how much I can eat and lose weight. I still eat many of the same meals that I did before I started losing weight, like spaghetti bolognese, curries and roast dinners.

“I know a lot of people worry about joining a slimming club because they don’t know what to expect, but they needn’t be afraid. Right from the first moment I walked into my Slimming World group I felt at home, and the support and motivation I’ve received from Claire and the rest of the group has been brilliant.

“They made me feel so welcome and now I don’t know what I was so nervous about –  I look forward to going to Slimming World each week. I definitely don’t believe I could have lost all this weight without them.

“Losing the weight has made such a huge difference – it’s changed my life. I’ve got so much more energy and I can do things now that I couldn’t before.

“My fitness has improved and I enjoy being active now rather than thinking of it as a chore – I love going to the gym, I’m more confident and I like the slimmer, happy, positive person I see in the mirror.

“I feel like a winner already, so being voted the Bowerhill group’s Woman of the Year 2016 is just the icing on the cake!”

Around one in four women in the UK and Ireland are severely overweight and at risk of suffering a range of health problems including diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Slimming World’s Woman of the Year competition recognises the achievements of women in making long-term healthy lifestyle changes.

The Bowerhill Slimming World group is held every Monday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm at Bowerhill Village Hall. To join or find out more call Claire on 07900 601239.

  • Community centre raises funds for toilet upgrade

A community centre in Melksham is raising funds to pay for improvements to its toilet facilities.

The Riverside Centre, a charity based next to the River Avon along Millennium Riverside Walk, has been raising money to upgrade the toilets, which the chair, Chris Pickett, says ‘do not comply with modern regulations.’

He said, “The toilets are a number of years old and we also have issues with one of the main drains. It blocks frequently and costs £100 each time to unblock. This drain is linked to the gents and needs to be bypassed.

“The other drain is linked to the disabled toilet facilities, and we need to add another cubicle alongside the disabled facilities so we can have a ‘mixed use’.”
