Wiltshire Council have been awarded nearly £7million to improve the safety of the A3102 and upgrade the road with new junctions, signage and road markings.
The A3102 will be upgraded between J16 of the M4 near Swindon to the A350 in Melksham via Royal Wootton Bassett and Calne. The project also aims to reduce journey times and emissions.
Wiltshire Council cabinet member for transport, cllr Caroline Thomas said, “In our business plan we set out our priorities to have well-connected communities that are safe, and this funding, which will improve reducing journey times and emissions as well as safety on the A3102, will help us to meet a number of related goals.
“We are now working on the specific details to establish the most effective way to use the funding to reduce the risk of collisions, and we’ll have more information on this soon.”
The investment is part of the government’s Safer Roads scheme that has seen £100m committed nationally to improve the safety of 50 ‘high-risk’ roads across the country. The latest £47.5million investment, of which Wiltshire Council was awarded £6.8million, aims to prevent around 760 fatal and serious injuries over the next 20 years.
News of the A3102 improvements follows the controversial proposal to build 650 dwellings on land south of Blackmore Farm in Melksham, which runs adjacent to the road.
