OVER 1,000 people visited the second annual Careers Fair on Friday 19th January that was jointly organised by local MP Michelle Donelan and Devizes MP Danny Kruger.
The fair took place at Melksham Community Campus, where the MPs joined forces to help showcase the huge range of local talent, skills and job opportunities in the area.
As well as helping young people from local schools to pick a quality career path, the event was also designed to help those who are out of work, those who are looking to reskill or upskill and those who would like a change in career but don’t know where or how to start looking.
Michelle Donelan said, “From international companies like Google offering employment skills to local companies like Hartley Farm Shop and Knorr-Bremse, there was much to offer. Some people even filled in job applications at the event.
“It was really striking that employer after employer commented on the level of interest in apprenticeships. In the last 10 years we have removed the stigma and increased the choice of high-quality apprenticeships. Since May 2015 there have been 2,881,900 apprenticeship starts and since May 2010 this total now stands at 5,259,400.
“Thank you to everyone who took part helping young people realise their true potential and assist others to gain new employment including in new sectors.”
Student Scarlett Fripp from Wiltshire College said, “I talked to a lot of very interesting people and got insights into different careers, I found it very helpful. I spoke to some solicitors and lawyers, I found it really interesting and it gave some insight into what the job would entail for me.”
