MELKSHAM’S new mini country park, Shurnhold Fields, is preparing for its official opening next year.
The new mini country park, which is ona the site of the former George Ward School playing fields, has received a donation of a stone “millions of years old” from the Sahara Sandpit, Sandridge Hill.
The stone will mark the entrance to Shurnhold Fields and be centre stage of the official opening, which is on schedule to take place in May next year.
“For the grand opening of the field, when all the facilities have been installed, someone suggested we have a marker stone,” explained chair of the Friends of Shurnhold Fields, and parish councillor, Paul Carter.
“Mark Sedwell from the Sahara Sandpit, which is a big quarry on Sandridge Hill, got in touch and said that they have lots of giant stones that are millions of years old – so I persuaded him to donate the stone as a community gesture.
“We are going to put a plaque on the stone to mark when the field is officially opened.
“We are about halfway there – once the seeps, picnic area, car park, and entrance display are finished, the grand opening will be held towards the end of May next year.”
