A BOWERHILL man is gearing himself up for a 1,400 kilometre (869 miles) cycle challenge in just five days for charity.
Jason Webb, is to attempt the gruelling London Edinburgh London challenge from July 28th-2nd August in just the five days permitted for Self Unlimited, a charity which supports adults with learning difficulties in the UK.
Jason took up cycling in 2008 thanks to the help of his father-in-law who is a keen long distance cyclist. Since then, he has caught the bug and now cycles up to 400K in a day – for fun!
He is part of the Audax UK cycling organisation which organises and hosts long distance cycling events in the UK, and, using a system of timed checkpoints, validates and records every ride.
In January this year he won the Audax Shield long distance award out of 400 riders with a total of 2,552 kilometres (1,585 miles) from October 2011 to 2012.
Jason said, “I wanted to take on this challenge to see if I could beat such a distance in the time limit set. I’m sure this is not going to be an easy task at all. But I can see how far I can push myself and if my body beat the pain, as well as all the other factors that will come my way, to complete the challenge.
“I’m doing the event as my wife Claire ran the London marathon last year for a charity called Self Unlimited, who provide a range of options for adults with learning disabilities so that they can lead fulfilling, safe and healthy lifestyles. Claire managed to raise £2000 in total and I was inspired by her achievement. I would like to thank my wife and children and family members for their support.”
Jason expects to spend up to 20 hours a day in the saddle during the challenge which is only run every four years.
