Melksham Music and Drama (MMAD) are celebrating another successful run of shows as they took audience members back to the 50s and 60s – the ‘golden era’ of music.
Member of the group, Linda Mence, said, “MMAD excelled themselves with their latest show ‘MMAD’s Jukebox’. This was the first show directed and produced by Kevin Hodges. Kevin said he was very proud of the cast, but the MMAD family are very proud of Kevin. As well as directing and producing, Kevin took it upon himself to direct all the music as well.
“The cast, under Kevin’s musical direction, managed a three-song acappella mash up incorporating Stand by Me by Ben E King, Up on the Roof by The Drifters and Sam Cooke’s Wonderful World. The audience was captivated by this unique performance and agreed that the harmonies were brilliant.
“The audiences were packed in every night, with some buying tickets for the second weekend because they had such a good time. The show closed with the audience stamping their feet and shouting for an encore – no-one wanted the show to end. A couple of ladies even dressed up in their rock ‘n’ roll dresses and totally looked the part.
“Everyone hopes that Kevin will consider directing more shows in the future. As well as singing there was some excellent dance routines as the ladies tapped out the clapping section of Greased Lightning and the men showed off their macho skills. The choreographers, Katie Mence and Penelope Taylor, added some complex moves to the dances and the Dirty Dancing lift was even achieved.
“If you are disappointed that you missed this fantastic Jukebox show you will have the opportunity to watch the next MMAD show, First Love, in September. This is another change of direction for this talented music and drama group where they will be rocking things up a bit. Justin Haggett is directing First Love – a musical love story with a rock theme.”
