A local primary school has celebrated the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough with a spectacular bird of prey display, fancy dress and a photography competition.
Pupils and staff at St Mary’s School in Broughton Gifford dressed as animals and wildlife for the day, including leopards, lions, butterflies, turtles, red pandas, jellyfish and elephants.
There was also a display from Pitcombe Rock Falconry, giving children the chance to handle and fly a range of birds of prey, with the favourite being the Little Owl.
A wildlife photography competition showcased some of Wiltshire’s finest flora and fauna and the winners received cuddly stuffed animals donated by Longleat. Every child also participated in an ‘Adopt an Animal’ event and all went home with a new cuddly animal.
Rounding off the celebrations was a reply from Sir David Attenborough’s daughter to an illustrated birthday card the children had sent.
PTA member Charlotte Godsiffe said, “We were absolutely thrilled to receive a reply to the birthday card a few days later. The children were delighted to know he had received their warm birthday wishes and seen their illustrations.”
