Melksham’s High Street is set to benefit from the introduction of two new “Shop Local” days this year, thanks to an initiative proposed by local councillor Jon Hubbard.
The new scheme will see the two free parking days made available by Wiltshire Council, used to create two special events where the town can celebrate the full range of stores and services available in the town.
Cllr Hubbard asked that the town council establish a task group to explore how these opportunities can be best used to promote the town’s shops and facilities and how it could be integrated within the existing subsidised one-hour free parking scheme supported by the town council.
Cllr Hubbard said, “This is a really exciting opportunity to showcase all that is fantastic about Melksham’s High Street. We still have an exciting range of stores in the town, albeit that they reflect the changing nature of High Streets in this new internet age.
“The collection of specialist stores alongside those that provide everyday items makes our High Street unique and innovative. While some traditional features such as banks are tragically choosing to leave towns such as Melksham, we do have exciting local stores coming to Melksham – a great example being the wonderful new micro pub just opened.”
