A packed programme of entertainment is on the way to Melksham, with a variety of shows, live music and community events lined up at the Assembly Hall over the coming weeks.

A nostalgic trip down memory lane will take place on Tuesday 12th May when Neil Sands brings his ā€˜Remember When’ show to town. • New electric vehicles for town council

Three new electric vehicles have been leased by Melksham Town Council for the amenities team to carry out their work.

The council is spending £1,517.34 a month on contract hire, including two Maxus T90 pickup trucks at £536.17 each per month and one EP AMP XL electric utility vehicle at £445 per month.

The vehicles were delivered recently after councillors unanimously voted to proceed at an Amenities and Facilities Committee meeting on Monday 17th November. Questions were raised over whether a range of quotes had been obtained and if non-electric vehicles were considered.

However, Cllr Adrienne Westbrook said discussion had taken place in a closed confidential session due to the financial information being shared.

  • Melksham dog park offers safe and secure off-lead walks

A secure and welcoming dog walking park has been created in Melksham, inspired by the experiences of its owners with a nervous rescue dog.

Jade Walker and Chris Hobbs launched ā€˜Vinny’s Getaway after their first dog, Vinny, struggled around other dogs after being attacked several times. They said this made everyday walks stressful, with constant vigilance needed and walks often cut short.

ā€œWe understood all too well the stress of constantly checking field gates for other dogs and planning exit routes,ā€ they said. ā€œIt took the joy out of countryside walks - which isn’t what you imagine when you get a dog.ā€

The couple said the lack of suitable private spaces for exercising and training led them to develop their own secure site, designed to allow dogs and owners to relax and enjoy time outdoors without interruption.

The name of the park was chosen in memory of their dog, using his Kennel Club registration name, ā€œVinny’s Getawayā€.

  • Council joins ā€˜No Mow May’ to boost biodiversity

A campaign to support pollinators and increase biodiversity is being trialled in selected areas across Melksham throughout May.

Melksham Town Council will trial ā€˜No Mow May’ at a number of roundabouts and selected areas including along Hazelwood Road and parts of King George V Playing Fields.

The national campaign, set up by charity Plantlife in 2019, encourages councils, organisations and residents to pause grass cutting throughout May, allowing wildflowers to grow and set seed.

Councillor Adrienne Westbrook said wilding and conservation are important parts of the council’s remit. She said, ā€œHowever, it must not be seen as a cost-cutting exercise, or it will lose all its impact.

  • Melksham man’s 270km desert run raises vital funds for charity

A man from Melksham has completed a 270km endurance run across the Sahara Desert in southern Morocco, raising nearly £3,000 for Dorothy House Hospice Care.

Liam Ralph ran the gruelling Marathon des Sables last month in temperatures as high as 40 degrees. He ran across sand dunes while battling minimal sleep, carrying 10kg of equipment in a rucksack including food, cooking equipment, water, hygiene items, first aid and clothes.

He has raised £2,921 for Dorothy House Hospice Care, which provided palliative care to his uncle when he died of motor neurone disease.

Liam, who completed the challenge in stages, said, ā€œThe long stage, 100km, took me 23 hours of running and walking through day and night. It was extremely difficult, as in the three days before I had run 35, 40 and 29 kilometres.

  • Lidl submits relocation plans for Melksham supermarket

A planning application has been submitted for the relocation of Melksham’s Lidl store to land off Eastern Way.

Earlier this year, Lidl GB revealed the plans as part of a multi-million-pound investment to relocate the existing store on Bath Road, which has been open for nearly two decades.

The application has now been submitted to Wiltshire Council and proposes a single-storey building in Melksham East that is over a third larger than the existing facility.

Customer parking would include 134 spaces, including six per cent accessible spaces, nine parent and child spaces and two electric vehicle charging points.

  • Melksham woman completes 60-mile challenge in memory of friend

A Melksham woman has completed a 60-mile charity challenge in her wheelchair, raising more than £1,000 for the mental health charity Samaritans in memory of a close friend.

Throughout April, Chloe Orr completed up to three miles a day around Melksham in her wheelchair with her dog Moni, taking on the charity’s ā€˜Walk 60 Miles with your Dog in April’ challenge in her own way after her friend Damian died by suicide last year.

After being involved in a car accident in 2015, Chloe sustained a spinal cord injury and is a full-time wheelchair user. She also lives with fibromyalgia and said the daily distances were a major physical challenge.

She said, ā€œEvery day I was really tired and really sore and in the mornings, I would wake up and be really stiff. It can be hard going out in a wheelchair because in Bowerhill in particular you don’t get many dropped curbs.ā€

Semington resident Jean Payne, who attended the show, said she felt ā€˜very lucky’ to have been able to see Tony Christie perform. She said, ā€œTony Christie completely wowed the audience with his almost non-stop performance and showed that he still has the power in his amazing voice."
