THE last of Melksham’s donations for Ukrainian refugees has begun the long journey to Poland.
Almost seven weeks ago, Melksham Town Council offered the Town Hall as collection point for donation of supplies to send to Poland to support Ukrainian refugees, and the response was overwhelming. So overwhelming, the Town Hall was filled and emptied three times, before filling up again with donations of clothes, medical supplies and food.
Last week, with the help of a group of volunteers, the final few boxes were loaded up onto vans to be moved for storage in a warehouse in Devizes, whilst Wiltshire Donations – volunteers across the county and surrounding area who are working together to send supplies to Poland – appeal for help with transport to Poland.
The town council has been working with local man, Dawid Fedyk, who is the Melksham representative for Wiltshire Donations.
He told Melksham News, “We are very thankful to everyone that has donated; everyone who has volunteered, giving up their free time to help this great cause; and Melksham Town Council who has given up the Town Hall to store donations and managed the local volunteers.
“To the local community a massive thank you; we really appreciate everything you have done. Lorries packed with donations have already made it to Poland, and the people there are very thankful for the help.”
Because of the overwhelming response, Wiltshire Donations is no longer appealing for donation of supplies. Instead they are focussing on transporting the remaining haul and are appealing for people with vans to help them.
They say, “We are still looking for people with vans who can travel to Poland to our partner organisations with donations already collected. We still have full warehouses! If you want to sponsor a transport, or your company can arrange a shipment of donations to Poland, please contact us at wiltshiredonations@gmail.com.”
