MELKSHAM Oak Community School have been helping students prepare for the world of work, by holding a series of career days, educating the children about what careers their chosen subjects can lead to.
The school held a Careers in DT Day, for the year 9 students who were visited by representatives who work in companies within four main DT subjects; textiles, food, child development and product design.
The event was attended by representatives from Cereal Partners the Nestlé brand, Lockheed Martin, Wadworth, Norland Nannies and some apprentices from Rolls-Royce and BMW.
Head of careers at Melksham Oak Community School Ceri Tranter said, “When Kate Gallagher, our deputy DT lead approached me about running a Careers in DT Day, I jumped all over it because I am passionate about helping young people and am very aware that some of the old-fashioned choices of GCSEs into A-Levels just won’t suit all students. I am really passionate about educating the children about how the career pathways can relate to the subjects they have chosen to study.
“These days are about the students becoming aware of the options open to them.”
Melksham Oak have run other events to support students with their career pathways and have more planned throughout the year.
Ceri added, “We recently held mock interviews for our year 11s on 7th February; we held an apprenticeship awareness day during Apprenticeship Awareness Week, and on 9th March we have an employability ready event. This is about students writing application forms, creating a CV, doing a role play and being able to conduct themselves in an interview.
“As a school we really struggle with employers coming forward to us. We have a list of events happening that employers could contact me directly to volunteer some of their time, whether that’s apprentices representing their business or personnel.”
If employers would like to be involved in any of the career events being held at Melksham Oak Community School, contact Ceri directly via tranterc@melkshamoak. wilts.sch.uk
