School values shine in new art mural

Pupils at a local primary school have created an inspiring mural to reflect the school’s new vision.

Children at Seend CofE Primary School created the mural in partnership with their art teacher, Jan Crabtree, to reflect the school’s new vision rooted in the words of Matthew 5:14–16:“You are the light of the world… let your light shine.”

Assistant Principal Holly Chivers said, “The mural, proudly displayed in the school hall, is a joyful celebration of the school’s commitment to helping every child feel valued, seen, and empowered to flourish. It captures the essence of the new vision and the school’s core values: respect, generosity, wisdom, and community.”

Pupils from across all year groups worked closely with Jan in a series of creative workshops, reflecting on what ‘letting your light shine’ means to them personally and as a community. Their ideas, drawings and words helped shape the final design where our light can be seen reaching the local area as well as further afield.

Art teacher Jan Crabtree said, “I have loved working with the school to bring the head teacher’s vision to life through discussion and development of the ideas of the children.

“The school council members’ involvement in the design, their research and painting this superb piece has been a great team effort. It was a privilege to be part of it and support the school.”

The mural was officially unveiled last term during a celebration attended by staff, pupils, parents, and members of the local community.

Reverend Caroline was invited to dedicate the mural and said, “I was delighted to dedicate the magnificent, newly created mural at Seend School at a special Goldbook this term. The mural depicts the essence of the inspiring vision and the school community have embraced the challenge to live this out in their words and actions.

“This mural will be a lasting reminder to us all as we seek to shine out in our school and community. What a wonderful landscape we have around us and what a privilege to have a special place within it as a school and church here at Seend.”

Do you know your Melksham trivia?

For Art’s Sake

John Joseph Haze- land (1838-1889) was a brewer’s son who chose not to go into the family business at Shaw Brewery after his father died in 1848, but instead found himself travelling to Norway in 1857, where he later settled and worked as a language teacher. Hazeland died in 1889 in Kristiania, Norway and his funeral viewing was immortalised in a painting by a famous artist also from Kristiania (now Oslo). Do you know the name of this Norwegian artist and what painting he is famously noted for? (Have a good think, take yourself to King George playing field and enjoy an ice cream from Edy’s.)

  • New central depot plans revealed for Christie Miller site

Plans for a new depot on the former Christie Miler site are set to go on public display, with residents invited to comment before a planning application is submitted later this summer.

The proposed Wiltshire Council central depot would be built on the former sports centre and golf course site at Bowerhill, bringing together a range of services, including highways, waste, streetscene, a Household Recycling Centre, maintenance workshops, offices and parking. The council says the fit-for-purpose facility would support council services for the next 30 years and improve efficiency by reducing the number of depot sites across the county.

The proposals will be on display at Melksham Community Campus from Monday 13th July to Friday 31st July. Display boards will show the proposed site layout, including enhanced Household Recycling Centre (HRC) facilities. Council officers and members of the project team will be available to answer questions on Tuesday 21st July from 10am to 4pm and Thursday 23rd July from 2pm to 7pm.

Headteacher Chris Light said, “Visiting the theatre is a big part of our ‘7 in 7 for Personal Development’ and we want all of our children to experience the magic of the theatre three times before they leave primary school.

  • Community rallies round charity facing lift repair bill

A Semington charity is facing a £45,000 bill to repair its ageing lift after plans to install a donated replacement were halted, despite local businesses rallying round to support the project.

The setback comes weeks after Chantelle Mead, chief executive at the Independent Living Centre in Semington, spent three weeks living and working inside the Independent Living Centre’s lift to raise funds for essential building improvements, including rewiring, a boiler replacement and a new lift.

The fundraising effort raised £1,850, with additional support coming from a donation offer of a lift from Stiltz and work from local builders Clements and Morris, who coordinated the installation project and sourced donated materials from suppliers.

However, Chantelle said the project has been halted because Wiltshire Council said the Stiltz lift does not meet the regulations required for a commercial building.
