JOIN Dr. Fiona Baskett at the Melksham Library on 22nd May, to hear how she uncovered some remarkable stories in her book, Jobs for the Women, that inspired a commemorative window.
The book, Jobs for Women: The Stories Behind the Stanton St. Quintin WAAF Memorial Window, is written by Dr. Fiona Baskett and explores a small church in rural Wiltshire, where a stained-glass memorial window commemorates the Womens Auxiliary Air Force ‘other ranks’ who were stationed at RAF Hullavington during World War II. Schoolgirls of the Great Depression, they were uprooted from their peaceful lives and proved their mettle in a variety of technical trades, taking on roles traditionally reserved for men.
The stories chronicle comradeship, tenacity, love, loss, alongside war.
Booking is required and tickets cost £4. The event runs from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. For more information call, 01249 705500, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 9.30am to 5pm. Or email, archives@wiltshire.gov.uk
