Further expansion planned for Melksham

Melksham could be set for further development as two major planning applications have been submitted.

If approved, the town could see 295 houses built on land north of the A3102 at New Road Farm and up to 70 houses built on land off Woodrow Road.

Wiltshire Council has also recently approved a planning application to develop 11 houses on land off Angelica Avenue in Melksham East.

Residents have shared their feedback on the applications, with many raising objections, citing concerns about a lack of infrastructure, the impact on the environment and ecology, and a potential increase in traffic that the developments may bring.

New Road Farm: 295 homes on land north of the A3102

Submitted by Bloor Homes South West, the proposed development could also include a public open space, formal play areas and allotments, with land safeguarded for a nursery.

On the Wiltshire Council planning portal, one resident said, “The proposed scheme is too close to the present scheme at Gladstone Road, whose residents would lose privacy by being overlooked by the new houses. I moved here because of the peace and quiet and the view over the fields, which I and several other residents will lose forever. This really will have an impact on mental health.”

The application was discussed at Melksham Without Parish Council’s planning meeting on Monday, 13th January, where residents attended to share their views.

Chair of the parish council’s planning committee, Cllr Richard Wood, said, “This development is one of the sites earmarked for development anyway, so the parish council cannot object to it, but we can make sure it will be as good as it can be.

“At the planning meeting, we had quite a lot of question marks about the plan. The developer has gone for two entrances to the site. We also have questions around access, the green space, and play areas. We would like people to be able to walk around the development without just walking on the streets. There are issues around a listed farm building. We can’t oppose it, but we have asked our Wiltshire Councillor to call it in.”

The application is due to be decided by 28th February.

70 homes on land off Woodrow Road

An outline planning application submitted by Maypool Estates could see 70 homes built along with open and play spaces.

Residents have also objected to this development, citing concerns about inadequate infrastructure and the ecological and environmental impact it could have.

One resident stated that the development could significantly increase traffic. “Seventy houses will generate 150 to 170 additional vehicles, 200 additional occupants, deliveries, etc. Woodrow and Forest Road will not be able to handle the additional traffic. Access to Woodrow from the site will be very difficult.”

Another resident described the application as “ludicrous,” claiming that the land around the development is a “massive” floodplain and that adding infrastructure would cause “wider issues.”

Melksham Town Council has also objected to the application, stating it does not comply with the Joint Melksham Neighbourhood Plan or Wiltshire Council’s Local Plan and is speculative. They argue that the development fails to meet community needs, lacks safe access to schools, doctors, and shops, and would increase reliance on private vehicles due to insufficient public transport. The council has raised concerns about traffic congestion on local roads, particularly through Lacock and Melksham town centre, and highlights the area’s potential as a site for the Melksham Bypass.

Melksham Without Parish Council also objected to the application. Cllr Richard Wood said, “We see this as speculative development. The developer tried to get planning permission for this in 2017, and that was turned down by the council. Now it has come back, but it’s half the size it was before. There are issues with archaeological remains at the site—possibly Roman remains, and maybe even earlier than that.

“The site isn’t ideal. There is an electric pylon that crosses it. The main concern is the issues with dampness and flooding, which are worsening year by year. There is also significant concern about the transport plan they provided, which we felt was very flawed. They don’t seem to understand the situation. Anyone who goes there knows the access is very tight. Even their plans show that you can hardly get a refuse collection vehicle in without it going up on the verges on either side.

“The road is very narrow there, and it could almost certainly become a rat-run into Lacock. We have had many objections from local residents for these reasons, and we certainly did not give it our approval.”

The application is due to be decided by 21st February.

  • Massive solar farm rejected as area has ‘too many’ solar panels

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Controversial plans to build a solar farm the size of 24 football pitches near Melksham have been thrown out by planners.

Members of Wiltshire Council’s strategic planning committee rejected plans for a solar farm and battery storage facility at Whistle Mead in Little Chalfield near Melksham.

The proposal, put forward by Blue Stone Renewables I Ltd, involved the installation of more than 31,000 solar panels, each standing at 2.7 metres tall.

The scheme would cover 17 hectares on a site totalling 26 hectares. The site is located about 180 metres from the nearest house and under a mile from the Grade I listed Great Chalfield Manor.

A previous proposal for a solar farm on the site was refused at appeal in 2014.

Stewart Lovesey of ABEI Energy told councillors, “As recent developments in Iran show, the need for domestic energy and fuel resilience is high.

A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis

Weighing in on bread laws

In 2008, The Telegraph announced that bread rules were being abandoned after 750 years. “A slice of history was created when the first ever 600g loaf went on sale, ending centuries-old legislation that has governed the weight of bread.”

In 1266 the Assize of Bread and Ale dictated that no baker in England would be allowed to bake a loaf unless it conformed to a certain weight. Since then, similar strict laws followed and is why sliced bread was sold in the standard 800g, or the half-sized 400g loaves.

What changed? A European directive abolished more than 800 years of British history and allowed bakers to bake loaves of any size, which, in turn, allowed boulangeries to open in this country. And this is why you can buy croissants made in a Tesco bakery.

Before then, the former legislation was strictly upheld by Trading Standards, whose officers often made spot checks at bakeries.

  • Melksham friendship group enjoy bingo train trip

A group of adults with learning difficulties from a Melksham group enjoyed a bingo train trip through the local area recently.

A total of 15 adults from Melksham’s Shine Friendship Cafe, aided by support workers and volunteers, boarded the train at Melksham station for a fun tour of the Wiltshire countryside thanks to local community rail partnership, TransWilts.

Along the way they played games of bingo, led by Great Western Railway (GWR) conductor, Henry-Arthur Freeman. They travelled to Swindon before heading to Westbury and then back to Melksham.

Melksham’s Shine Friendship Café is a weekly social space for adults with learning difficulties and their support workers, offering a fun session full of bingo and karaoke, as well as a quiet session.

  • Cup success for young Lionesses in their first season

Melksham Town’s U9 Lionesses have marked their first season together by reaching a cup final.

The young side lost to a strong Chippenham side in the North Wilts Youth final, played in Marlborough last month.

“The girls had a fantastic morning, walking onto the pitch to cheers from the crowd, taking part in the handshake line, seeing their names and photos in the matchday programme, and enjoying the presentation at the end,” said coach Karen Broadhead.

“While the result was disappointing, the scoreline didn’t reflect the fight, determination and heart they showed from start to finish and every single one of them is a winner in my eyes."

  • Villagers to create ‘field of remembrance’ display

Residents in Whitley are making thousands of poppies for a special display to mark this year’s Remembrance commemorations.

The group is aiming to produce 18,000 poppies to form a ‘field of remembrance’ at Pocock’s Paddock on the corner of Middle Lane and Corsham Road.

The display will include soldier silhouettes and a walkway through the field, with a bench for visitors to sit and reflect on loved ones.

The project is being organised by local resident Barry Pocock, who is hoping for it to become an annual event bringing the community together.

He said, “We want to show what can be achieved when we work together. It is a chance for people of all ages to share stories.”

  • Local man offers free bee collection

A local bee enthusiast is offering to collect swarms of honeybees and bumblebees free of charge across Melksham and the surrounding area.

Pete Colegate has been collecting bee swarms for around 20 years and says he is available to ‘come to the rescue’ of anyone who needs a helping hand.

He said, “Due to the very wet winter many colonies of bees have been lost, and as we rely on them as pollinators, we must ensure of their survival.”

Pete said that once collected, the bees are taken to one of several hives. He said, “We then give them to a beginner who is starting to keep bees. The bees will reproduce and then start again. We never kill anything. We do sell the honey among neighbours if we have any surplus.”

  • Play areas selected for £153,000 improvements

Play areas in Melksham have been selected for an upgrade following a review by councillors at Melksham Town Council.

At an extraordinary Full Council meeting on 27th April, councillors unanimously approved plans to combine £53,000 left over from last year’s budget with £100,000 already set aside for 2026/27, creating a total fund of £153,000 for upgrades.

Building on recent play area tours and a report presented to members, councillors reviewed priorities across multiple sites and considered factors such as condition, ownership, delivery options, accessibility and potential grant funding.

Councillors agreed that play areas at Dunch Lane and Riverside would be the highest priority, with the council now set to move forward with putting the work out to tender.

Two other play parks will also see repairs, including fencing at Speedwell Close and targeted improvements at the Hazelwood play area.
