Pupils learn about life in Parliament with MP visit

Pupils at The Manor Primary School were recently visited by Melksham MP Brian Mathew to learn about life in Parliament. 

MP Brian Mathew was given a full tour of the school, and pupils from Years 5 and 6 were interested to hear him discuss the role of an MP and the function of Parliament.

Pupils were also given the opportunity to ask the MP a wide range of questions on both local and national issues.

Headteacher Michael Park, said, “It was a pleasure to welcome Brian Mathew to The Manor this week to hear about his role as a Member of Parliament. The children asked him a range of questions on local and national issues, including housing, the NHS, Donald Trump and improving the play areas in Melksham.”

One pupil said, “I learnt more about Melksham and what he does as an MP.”

MP Brian Mathew said, “It was a pleasure to visit The Manor School in Melksham, to tour the school and meet with Year 5 and 6 pupils to take questions. I was so impressed with the interest the children took not only in their local area but also in bigger national and international issues. It’s always a joy to see young people so engaged, and I fielded questions on a wide range of topics. It was also good to meet with the headteacher, Mr Park, to chat about the school more generally.”

The visit comes ahead of a trip Year 6 pupils will be taking to the Houses of Parliament to further enhance their understanding of parliamentary democracy.

“This is a trip we offer to all children at The Manor,” explained the headteacher. “It will be an opportunity for them to see debates in Parliament and learn more about democracy in our country.”
