Teen bowler wins two silver medals for England

A Melksham teenager has won two silver medals representing England at a recent international indoor bowls tournament.

Alfie Holland, 17, travelled to Scotland to compete in the International Under 18s Indoor Bowls Series, which took place from 9th to 11th January. He competed against some of the best young bowlers from across the home nations.

Alfie plays outdoor bowls at the Avon Bowls Club, by Melksham Community Campus, and indoor bowls at North Wilts in Chippenham.

Alfie said, “I feel honoured and proud to have been selected for England over the past three years and to win two silver medals in my last year in the Under 18s was amazing.

“It has been a fantastic three years. The team management and squad members are all a fantastic bunch of people. Those that have supported me and messaged me from both Avon Bowls Club and North Wiltshire Indoor Bowls Club, thank you. It means a lot.”

A member of Avon Bowls Club, Danny Holland, said, “Alfie delivered an impressive performance. He narrowly missed out on gold in both the triples and the fours competitions, with each final decided by a tense tie-break.

“Alfie’s achievement is particularly notable given his age and the high standard of competition at the event. His composure and consistency throughout the weekend earned praise from teammates and spectators alike and his performances highlighted the strength of young talent emerging from Avon Bowls Club.”

Alfie has now won three indoor international silver medals and an outdoor international gold.

“Representing England at international level is a significant milestone in Alfie’s young career,” added Danny. “Alfie Holland’s future in the sport looks extremely promising, and he will no doubt be one to watch in the years ahead.”

Avon Bowls Club is a youthful club and is always looking to attract new players of all ages, and has regular social events throughout the year, including coffee mornings every other Friday and bingo every other Sunday.
