More than 200 people took over Melksham Market Place joining a community dance to Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now as this year’s Sham Jam Festival got under way.
Organised by Melksham Town Council, the event on Friday 18th September saw residents of all ages warm up with dancing before taking part in the main routine, led by Mojo Moves.
Some residents had learnt the moves ahead of the event, while others joined in on the night, with local dance groups also taking part.
The Queen theme was embraced by some of the dancers, with Freddie Mercury-style moustaches and his signature yellow outfits adding to the spectacle.
Mojo Moves said, “This is the opening night at the Sham Jam Festival. It’s a lovely arts and culture festival. I think we need to bring more fun to the streets of our British towns, less of the sort of aggression and more, more eccentric dancing.”
Mayor Saffi Rabey added, “It’s fantastic to put on these community events, which brings everybody together in the centre of the town. These are mainly free events for Sham Jam. To see people having a really great time Friday after work, dancing, smiling, and laughing, it’s just brilliant, the kind of stuff we should be doing.”
The community dance opened the 10-day Sham Jam Festival, which runs until Sunday 27th September and features music, arts, comedy, literature and community events at venues across Melksham.
